Mental Math on the shared screenMental Math on a player's phone

A mental arithmetic race for the whole room, from a family table to a class of 50. Everyone gets the same sum at the same time and types the answer on the number pad on their own phone, tablet or laptop, where a real keyboard works too. Quick right answers score the most, right answers in a row build a streak bonus, and the shared screen shows who was fastest and the most common slip. Six levels run from Kids (3 + 4) to Genius (348 × 27); the host picks a range, so the sums get harder as the game goes on, and sets the time for each question. The sums are made fresh for every game, so they never run out, and every answer is a whole number.

How to play Mental Math

Goal

  • Score the most points by working out each sum right, and fast.

How it works

  • Everyone gets the same sum at the same time. Type the answer on the number pad and press Send answer. On a laptop you can type it on the keyboard: digits, Backspace, Escape to clear, Enter to send.
  • You get one answer per sum, and it can't be changed. The answers stay hidden until time runs out or everyone has answered.
  • A right answer scores 500 points, plus up to 500 more for answering quickly. Right answers in a row add a streak bonus: +100 for 2, +200 for 3, up to +500. A wrong or missing answer scores 0.
  • Every answer is a whole number from 0 to 99999. The sums climb from the host's easiest level to the hardest, and division always comes out even.
  • The highest score after the last sum wins. Awards go to the fastest fingers, the sharpest, the longest streak, and whoever was off by one the most.

Questions and answers

How hard are the sums?
There are six levels. Kids adds and takes away within 10, Easy goes to 20 and the 2 to 5 times tables, Medium uses two-digit numbers and every times table, Hard three-digit numbers and missing numbers, Super squares, percentages and the order of operations, and Genius sums like 348 × 27 or 87². The host picks the easiest and the hardest level, and the questions climb from one to the other.
Can a whole class play?
Yes. A room takes up to 50 players, each on their own phone or laptop. Put the shared screen on a projector: it shows the sum, who has answered, and after each question how many got it right and who was fastest.
Can I type on a keyboard?
Yes. Every screen has the number pad, and on a laptop you can type the digits, use Backspace to delete one, Escape to clear and Enter to send.
Is there a calculator check?
No game can see what is next to your phone. The timer is the guard: the host sets 5 to 90 seconds for each question, and quick answers score far more than slow ones.
