How to play Word Scramble (Trùm Ngôn Từ): one shuffled word, everyone types, fastest wins

A word step by step, the clues, typing on a phone keyboard, Vietnamese accents, scoring and tips, for 1 to 50 players.

Word Scramble is a word race for 1 to 50 players. Everyone gets the same word with its letters shuffled, and types the real word on their own keyboard. The faster you solve it, the more you score. Its Vietnamese name, Trùm Ngôn Từ, means “the boss of words”.

In GatherPlay's Word Scramble each player types on their own phone, tablet or laptop. A shared screen is optional: it shows the letters big, who has solved it and the answer. The letters are on every phone too.

The goal

Have the most points after the last word. You score by solving each word, and by solving it fast.

A word, step by step

1. Everyone gets the same letters at the same moment, with a category (Animals, Food, At home…) and blanks that show how many letters each word has.
2. Type the word. You don't need to press Enter: once every letter is in, your answer sends itself. Enter and the Send button work too.
3. Wrong? Your box shakes and says "Not yet". Nobody else sees it, and it costs nothing: fix a letter and it sends again.
4. Halfway through the time, the first letter appears in the blanks on every screen.
5. The word closes when time runs out, when everyone has solved it, or when the host skips it. Then the answer shows with who solved it and how fast.

Clues and helpers

• The category tells you where to look.
• The blanks show the letters of each word: 3 + 4 is a two-word answer.
• As you type, the tiles you have used go dark, and a letter that isn't among the tiles turns red.
• Shuffle mixes the tiles again on your own screen: a new order often shows the word.
• Any real word made of exactly the same letters counts.

Vietnamese and accents

In a Vietnamese game the tiles keep their accents, Ọ, Ư, Đ, as a clue. You don't have to type them: "hoc sinh" solves "học sinh", so a phone without a Vietnamese keyboard can play. If your group wants it harder, the host turns on "Accents count", and then only the word with its accents counts (both hòa and hoà are fine).

Scoring

• A solve scores 500 points, plus up to 500 more for speed.
• The first player to solve a word gets 100 extra.
• Wrong tries and the hint cost nothing.
• Players with the same score share a rank.

Tips

• Find the start first: in English look for pairs like TH, SH and CH, in Vietnamese for NG, NH, TR and PH.
• Short words first in a two-word answer: fill the shorter blank, then the rest falls into place.
• Keep your keyboard open between words: the next word comes into the same box.
• Don't wait for the hint if you have a guess: a wrong try is free.
