How to host a trivia night at home
Setup, teams, timing and scoring for a relaxed trivia night with friends.
A trivia night is one of the easiest parties to host. You need a screen, a few friends and about an hour. The hard parts used to be writing questions, reading them out and keeping score. A phone-based trivia game does those for you.
The setup
- A TV or laptop everyone can see shows the questions and the scoreboard.
- Each player answers on their own phone, so nobody shouts out answers or peeks at a neighbour's sheet.
- Snacks within reach. Trivia makes people hungry.
Solo or teams?
Solo play keeps everyone involved and works well up to about 10 people. With a bigger crowd, form teams of two or three and give each team one phone; teams argue over answers, which is half the fun.
Timing and rounds
- Play several short games rather than one long one. Five to eight questions per game keeps the energy up.
- Leave a break between games for drinks and trash talk.
- Finish with a deciding game for the night's champion.
Scoring that keeps it exciting
In GatherPlay Trivia a correct answer scores 500 points plus up to 500 more for speed, and a wrong answer scores nothing. Fast, right answers win, so the scoreboard can flip on the last question. Everyone answers once per question, with no changes.
Prizes
Small and silly beats big and serious: the winner picks the next game, chooses the music, or skips washing up. Keep a running tally across games if you want a champion of the night.
Playing apart
Trivia works well on a call. Start a Discord or Google Meet call, open the shared screen in a browser tab and share that tab, with its sound. Everyone answers on their own phone with the code. If the call lags, tap the Focus button at the top of your phone to switch Focus off: the question then shows on the phone too, so a slow stream never costs anyone points.
Start in a minute
- Open GatherPlay on the TV and host a Trivia game.
- Everyone joins with the QR code on the screen.
- Choose how many questions and how long each one lasts, then start.
