How to play Last Card: rules, action cards and the last card call
The deck, a turn, every action card, the challenge, calling last card, and scoring, for 2 to 10 players.
Last Card is a shedding card game for 2 to 10 players, in the same family as Crazy Eights. On your turn you play a card that matches the top card of the pile by colour, number or symbol. Action cards skip players, reverse the order, or make the next player draw. The first player to empty their hand wins.
In GatherPlay's Last Card your hand stays on your phone and the pile shows on the shared screen. The game shuffles, deals, checks every play and keeps score, so nobody needs a deck. Each colour also has its own icon, so players who find colours hard to tell apart can play too.
The goal
Be the first player with no cards in hand. The winner scores the cards left in everyone else's hand: number cards at face value, Skip, Reverse and Draw Two 20 each, and wilds 50 each.
The deck
- 108 cards in four colours: red, yellow, green and blue.
- In each colour: one 0, two of each number from 1 to 9, and two each of Skip, Reverse and Draw Two.
- Four Wilds and four Wild Draw Fours, which have no colour.
A turn, step by step
- Everyone gets 7 cards, and the first number card is turned up to start the pile.
- On your turn, play one card that matches the colour in play, or the number or symbol of the top card. A Wild can always be played.
- If you can't play, or don't want to, draw one card.
- If the card you drew can be played, you may play it now, or keep it and end your turn.
- Play then moves to the next player. When the draw pile runs out, the pile under the top card is shuffled into a new one.
The action cards
- Skip: the next player loses their turn.
- Reverse: play changes direction. With two players it works like a Skip.
- Draw Two: the next player draws 2 cards and loses their turn.
- Wild: you choose the next colour.
- Wild Draw Four: you choose the next colour, and the next player draws 4 and loses their turn. You may only play it when you have no card of the colour in play.
Challenging a Wild Draw Four
When a Wild Draw Four is played on you, you may take the 4 cards or challenge. If you challenge, your phone shows you the other player's hand, and only you see it. If they had a card of the colour in play, they bluffed: they draw 4 and you play your turn. If they did not, you draw 6 and lose your turn.
Calling last card
When you are down to one card, tap Last card. You can do it on your turn while you still hold two cards, or right after you play. Until you do, any other player can tap Catch, and you draw 2 cards. The chance to catch you ends when the next player plays, draws or challenges.
House rules
- Stacking, off by default: answer a Draw Two with a Draw Two or a Wild Draw Four, and a Wild Draw Four with another. The first player who can't answer takes the whole stack.
- A turn timer, off by default: when time runs out, the game draws a card for the player and moves on.
Tips
- Keep a Wild for later. It is the card that gets you out of a bad spot.
- Watch the card counts. When a player is down to two cards, change the colour away from the one they just played.
- Play your high numbers and action cards early: if someone else wins, they are what costs the most.
- Tap Last card on your turn with two cards, before you play. Then nobody can catch you.
Playing apart
Start a Discord or Google Meet call and share the shared screen's browser tab. Everyone plays from their own phone with the code. If the stream lags, tap the Focus button at the top of your phone to switch Focus off: the top card and everyone's card count then show on the phone too.
Start a game
